Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Awards - The Finalists!

The finalists for the 2019 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Awards have been unveiled with two Benromach expressions shortlisted in the final eight.

The annual competition seeks to find the best whiskies from Scotland’s most prolific whisky-producing region.

Just two finalists are chosen in each category during a blind taste challenge by the judging panel which is composed of nine leading industry experts and whisky writers.

Benromach 10 Years Old was shortlisted in the 12 years and under category. Matured in a mixture of first fill bourbon barrels and first fill Sherry casks, the whisky offers notes of rich sherry, delicate spice, green apples and a touch of light peat smoke.

Benromach 15 Years Old was selected in the single malts aged 13-20 years old category. Benromach 15 Years Old has a distinctive golden amber colour with Sherry aromas on the nose followed by vanilla and spicy ginger, complemented by delicate chamomile and menthol notes. Earlier this year, Benromach 15 Years Old won Best Speyside Single Malt Scotch at the World Whisky Awards.

In the only competition of its type in the world, the winners of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Awards are chosen by the public who participate in judging sessions held around the world in cities including New York, Cologne, Rome, Belfast and London. A final judging is held at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival in May 2019 before the results are revealed.

Keith Cruickshank, Benromach Distillery Manager, said:

“We are incredibly proud that two expressions from our core range have been selected as category finalists. These awards are particularly special as Speyside is home to so many beautiful whiskies.

“Appearing in this list is testament to the decades of commitment our distillers have shown in handcrafting every dram of Benromach. We manage the process by sight, sound and touch and use only traditional techniques to create our distinctive flavours – beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke.

“As our 20th anniversary year comes to a close, we look forward to these expressions embarking on their international journey and hearing the feedback from the public who will ultimately decide the winners.”

The results will be announced during the ceilidh that concludes the 2019 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.
