Benromach was the first distillery to introduce this wood finish in 2007. After an initial maturation period the whisky was transferred into Sassicaia wine casks where it was allowed to mature for a further 27 months. Sassicaia is regarded as one of the most prestigious wines in the world. It is created in the exciting and fashionable Tuscan wine producing region of Bolgheri.

First fill Bourbon & Sherry casks followed by 27 months in Sassicaia casks.

A beautiful balance between the rich Sassicaia and the fruit and peat

Tasting Note

AROMA without water

Rich fruits - hints of blackberries and red grapes, a delicate and rounded smokiness lingers. Fragrant with influences of honey, lavender and nutmeg develop. Complex and robust.

TASTE without water

Mouth tingling - rich, smooth and very creamy, a pronounced smoky note comes to the fore. A subtle sweetness lingers.

AROMA with water

Remains fresh with malty aromas and hints of red berries. Influences of rum and dark chocolate become evident.

TASTE with water

Mouth warming - with a delicate hint of pepper, sweet vanilla flavours develop. Becomes drying and a subtle hint of peat lingers in the background.

Benromach

Established in 1898 the distillery experienced many closures and changes of ownership prior to 1993 when malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail rescued it. After being extensively re-equipped, Benromach was officially re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998. Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.
